Lily came to with a jerk. Her face stung as if she’d been slapped. Her ears rang. She tried to lift a hand, but her limbs wouldn’t cooperate.

“Wake up.”

The man’s harshly spoken words rammed a shaft of terror straight through the darkness clouding her mind.

No. Lily’s scream of denial inside her head echoed painfully. She squeezed her eyes tight. She didn’t want to face the real, live nightmare.

“I said, wake up!”

Rough hands shook her.

Memory rushed in. She’d been sitting on the bench outside the church when someone had come up behind her. She remembered the prick of something sharp jabbed into her neck and then nothing. Clarity filtered through the throbbing in her head like the snapping of an angry dog. She’d been kidnapped. Again.

Only this time Piccone had been careful, drugging her and not giving her an opportunity to find a weapon to use for escape. Her hands were tied behind her back. Her feet bound. She lay on her side. The cold, hard floor coarse against her cheek.

Her eyelids flew open. Shadows shrouded the room. No lights overhead. The curtain covering the window was closed. A minimal amount of ambient light shone through the edges where the curtain didn’t meet the wood walls. The place was unfamiliar. Some sort of cabin. She jerked upright, trying to sit. Pain exploded in her head, in her wrists. Fear rippled through her. A moan escaped, weak and thin.

Forceful hands pushed her back down, adding to the terror clawing at her throat. “Good. I want you conscious when I kill you.”

A man stepped into view. She gasped. Blinked. It wasn’t Greg. She didn’t know the man in front of her.

Horrified, she shrank back and tried to roll away.

But there was nowhere to go.

She was trapped. By a would-be killer.
